Unlock the Around The Mountains Trail: How to plan your adventure

Queenstown is the hub from which you can best access the Around The Mountains Cycle Trail. Follow this check list to ensure you have ticked all the necessary boxes.

  1. Decide on how long you would like to spend on the trail. 4 days is recommended for riders capable of covering an average of around 50km / day. If you wish to shorten the ride you can book a shuttle from Mavora to Mossburn, contact Wild Rides Fiordland.
  2. Book your Bike Hire through us: email or call us now.
  3. Book ferry transport with Southern Discoveries or Real Journeys to get you from Queenstown across the lake to the start of the trail at Walter Peak Station.
  4. Book accomodation at each of your stops.
  5. Book your shuttle transport through Around The Southern Lakes from Kingston to Queenstown.

We suggest that you hire bikes with pannier bags for this backcountry adventure – or feel free to bring your own bike and use our shuttle service only. Being remote and isolated it is important that you are self-reliant and can fix basic bike problems on your own.

We recommend that you take on this loop in an anti-clockwise direction, and start your journey by crossing Lake Wakatipu to Walter Peak on either the Southern Discoveries or TSS Earnslaw.

This 186km trail allows for numerous riding options.
