My wife was reluctant to do this because she isn't really a biker and some of the reviews make this sound quite hilly (which it can be). So I promised... read more her we could book her an ebike (which she was wanting to try anyway) and that she wouldn't have to work to hard biking the hills. I'd recommend the ebike for anyone even somewhat hesitant about doing this. It makes the trip so much easier and more enjoyable. I'm a avid road biker and while most of the terrain is downhill, if you ride to some of the wineries and to the bottom of the route and back to the tavern you will get a pretty good workout.
All that said, it was a really fun trip. We stopped at almost all the wineries. Enjoyed Arrowtown, had lunch along the way and talked with a lot of happy people. We even got to watch the bungee jumpers enjoying their freefall. The staff was great as well showing my wife how to handle the ebike and getting us all sized correctly on our bikes.
This is a fun couples activity and a great way to explore the surrounding Queenstown area.
Great service and Hamish the driver was a top bloke. Good chat and great detail on the how to of the tour. Highly recommend!
This was Tour #1 of three winery cycle tours we took during our two-month vacation in New Zealand. We loved it so much we decided to do it again... read more when we were in Blenheim and Napier. We booked this tour through Around the Basin Bike Tours, who provided bikes, helmets, maps, and shuttle service at the beginning and end of the ride. We cycled from Arrowtown to Gibbston Valley on the Arrow River Bridge Trail and the Queenstown Trail, crossing suspension bridges and riding through farmland with spectacular mountain views and along deep gorges with turquoise water. In Gibbston Valley, the heart of the wine-making country, we visited numerous winery cellar doors and a fantastic craft brewery with wood fired pizza! The trail was easy and the beverages were outstanding. We will definitely do it again.
A good way to visit the wineries and see the countryside at your own pace whilst getting some exercise. Visting the bungy jumping is something not to be missed.
